Assembling the Bassoon
Parts of the Bassoon
When you open your bassoon case, it will probably look something like this:
Take a minute to memorize how your bassoon looks in the case. Every piece should fit snugly into a form-fitting slot. Take note of which end goes where and which side goes up for each part of the instrument.
In addition to the four main joints of the bassoon (boot, wing, long, and bell), your case should also contain these four other items:
- Bocal - A good quality bocal is a worthy investment that will improve your sound greatly.
- Reeds - Having quality reeds is critical to producing a good bassoon sound.
- Hand Crutch - This acts as a pommel to help space the the right hand from the bassoon.
- Seat Strap - A neck strap puts the bassoon at the wrong angle for playing. Get a seat strap.
